This heavyweight construction truck appears in the bright yellow and black colour scheme of NCB (National Coal Board) registered EWJ 45J from 1979.
In real life, the dumper truck was produced on an AEC 690, Aveling Barford as well as a Scammell LD55 chassis. They would have had a badge on the front bar or grille denoting AEC, AB or Scammell but to make full use of the new tooling the badge has been omitted so Oxford can produce all three variants.
The specifications listed in the sales brochure of the period gave the in-depth details of vehicle components and operational attributes. And Oxford’s model contains a wealth of the physical features. The bright yellow bodywork extends to the wheels as well and an extra component has been added to the offside of the bonnet in the shape of an air cleaner. The front grille behind the bull bars is black, as is the interior and the steering wheel. Other external trim is finished in silver including the windscreen surrounds.
It is easy to imagine this chunky vehicle working in a mining environment where it would be in its element although we suspect its pristine appearance would be shortlived with all the coal dust and slagheaps around!
